Description

Struck under Constantius II, son of Constantine the Great, this well-preserved bronze follis commemorates the emperor’s vow (votum) renewals—ceremonial promises of continued rule and military success.

  • Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Constantius II facing right.
Legend: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG – “Our Lord Constantius, Dutiful and Fortunate Augustus.”

  • Reverse: Inscription in four lines:
VOT X / MVLT XX – “Vows for 10 years, hopes for 20,”
    enclosed within a laurel wreath.
Exergue: SMANƐr – indicating the Antioch mint, 5th officina.

A sharp example with a strong reverse and attractive surfaces, this piece reflects the ceremonial and symbolic artistry of the late Roman Empire.
