Arcadius – "Virtus Exerciti" (AD 395–401) Bronze Nummus

This late Roman bronze nummus was struck under Emperor Arcadius, ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire, during the early years of his sole reign. The reverse proudly proclaims the strength and virtue of the imperial army, a common theme amid growing internal and external threats to the empire.

• Obverse: Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Arcadius right, seen three-quarter facing.
  Legend: D N ARCADI VS P F AVG – “Our Lord Arcadius, Dutiful and Fortunate Augustus.”

• Reverse: Arcadius in military attire standing left, holding a spear and resting his left hand on a shield, while Victory (Victoria) stands behind him, placing a wreath on his head.
  Legend: VIRTVS EXERCITI – “Valor of the Army”
  Exergue: ANTA – indicating the Antioch mint, 1st officina.

This example is well-centered with strong details and a lovely patina, retaining excellent eye appeal despite minor wear.
