Justin II, Half Follis (AD 568–569) Byzantine Empire
Description
This bronze ½ follis was struck during the early reign of Justinus II, the successor and son-in-law of Justinian I. Issued in regnal year 2 (AD 568/569) at the Thessalonica mint, the coin reflects the strong continuity of imperial iconography in early Byzantine coinage.
-
Obverse: Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justin II facing, holding a globus cruciger in one hand and a shield in the other.
Legend: DN IVSTINVS PP AV – “Our Lord Justin, Perpetual Emperor.” -
Reverse: Large K (denomination = 20 nummi), with cross above, ANNO to the left, II (regnal year) to the right, and TES (Thessalonica) in the exergue.
