Description

A rare and historically intriguing bronze follis issued by the usurper Nicephorus Basilacius, who briefly asserted power in 1078 AD during the turbulent final years of the Macedonian dynasty.

  • Obverse: Iconic image of Christ Pantocrator, facing, wearing a nimbus crown, pallium, and colobium. He raises His right hand in benediction and holds the Gospels in His left. Inscription: ΝΙΚΗΦω-ROC BAC with IC–XC in the fields.

  • Reverse: Patriarchal cross on base; in upper field: IC – XC; in lower field: NI – KA – the timeless Byzantine invocation "Jesus Christ conquers."

This Class N anonymous issue stands apart as it bears the name of the rebel Nicephorus Basilacius, making it one of the few anonymous types linked directly to a usurper. A scarce and significant coin that embodies both religious symbolism and political ambition.
